Dragon and Girl

When the sun rises, so do I. Raising my body, I find my way out of the cave the way any beast would greet warmth.

In the language of dragons, a fiery roar means morning. But, there are no dragons to do the same. Only a strange human girl plans a smoke as I rouse a weak breath of fire.

I am all she has found, and she is who I’ve been left with. She says she’d been looking for her brother, who’d left their village to find his passion. His whereabouts are unknown.

With red berries she has crushed, she inscribes art on the ground. It is of her and me. She leaves a handprint when she is done drawing.

Today, again, we’ll leave this place to find another dragon’s cave. She dreams we’ll find a horde of them dancing around a bonfire of some beast’s meat, somewhere. Someday, when I can speak her language, I plan on telling her that like humans, dragons meet old age.

That day has long to come.

Thank you for reading!

This was inspired by a random word generator prompt on the internet— last dragon.
